Participation of WCMS students in Congressman Grijalva's essay competition.

On Friday, April 8, 2016, Students who participated in Congressman Raul Grijalva’s essay competition were invited to attend a reception at the Congressman’s Tucson office. The essay competition was entitled “Women Who Inspire Youth”. Also on hand at the reception were women leaders of the community at the local, county, state, and federal levels. District faculty in attendance were Dr. Roman Soltero and Mr. Patrick Miller, and the students that attended were Kassandra Loya and Karina Torres, all representing Wade Carpenter Middle School and NUSD. Karina and Kassandra were presented with a certificate of participation and were able to talk with the women leaders, who discussed the importance of entering career fields where they can go on to inspire future young men and women. All students who participated will be receiving a certificate from the Congressman in a folder bearing the U.S. House of Representative’s seal. The competition was open to all middle school students from Congressman Grijalva’s district here in Arizona. Many districts participated from Yuma to Sierra Vista and Nogales up to Tucson. Although we did not win the competition, we were the only school recognized by name. Our carpenter students submitted more entries than the entire TUSD district combined. In all we submitted between 70 and 75 total entries. People written about encompassed local female community leaders, mothers, sisters, and teachers.
